Motivation for Choosing a Profession and its Connection with the Value Attitude Towards the Profession Among Architectural Restoration Students

Abstract:
In the current context of professional education, the problem of developing a value-based attitude toward the profession of architectural restorer is particularly relevant. A significant gap between applicants’ idealized notions of the profession and their actual professional activities, as well as a lack of awareness of their professional choices, pose serious obstacles to the high-quality professional development of specialists in the field of cultural heritage preservation. The aim of the study is to examine the relationship between the motivation for choosing the profession of architectural restorer and the level of development of students’ value-based attitudes toward it. The research methodology is based on an integrated approach to the study of professional self-determination. The following diagnostic methods were used: R.V. Ovcharova’s “Motives for Choosing a Profession” method, E. Schein’s “Career Anchors” method, V.I. Morosanova’s “Style of Self-Regulation of Behavior” method, and N.S. Prygin’s “Autonomy Assessment” questionnaire. The study was conducted on a sample of 15 first-year students majoring in “Reconstruction and Restoration of Architectural Heritage.” The study’s results revealed a correlation between the level of value attitudes toward the profession of restoration architect and the motivations for choosing it. At high values, internal incentives predominate: the opportunity for creative self-realization, alignment with personal abilities, prospects for professional growth, a sense of responsibility for preserving cultural heritage, and a desire to contribute to society. As the level of value attitudes decreases, the influence of internal incentives gradually diminishes, while external factors–financial security and the prestige of the profession–increase. For students with low values, career choices are often situational, with external circumstances and the opinions of others playing a significant role. The key finding of the study is that the nature of the motivational sphere, based on internal motivation for the substantive characteristics of professional activity, is a determining factor in the formation of a stable value attitude toward the profession.
