The Origins of the Scientific Pedagogical School of NSPI/NSPU: On the 125th Anniversary of the Birth of Feodosiy Feodosievich Shamakhov

Abstract:
October 20, 2025 marks the 125th anniversary of the birth of Feodosiy Feodosievich Shamakhov, a prominent scientist, founder and permanent head of the Siberian Branch of Historians of Pedagogy, one of the founders of the pedagogical scientific school of NSPI/NSPU. The first steps of F. F. Shamakhov’s pedagogical activity, his scientific formation and professional growth are associated with Tomsk. In 1966, Feodosiy Feodosievich came to the Novosibirsk Pedagogical Institute as a mature scientist, whose assets included the defense of his candidate’s (1941) and doctoral (1958) dissertations devoted to the study of schools in Western Siberia in the late 19th – early 20th centuries. As a professor of the Department of Pedagogy and Psychology at NSPI, he published general monographs, developed methodological approaches to studying the regional education system, held annual scientific conferences, supervised postgraduate research, and created a research circle for students. At the same time, the Novosibirsk period of F. F. Shamakhov’s activity is poorly represented in scientific and pedagogical historiography. The purpose of this article is to define and characterize the trends in the development of the scientist’s scientific views in the 60s and 70s of the 20th century, and to identify his contribution to the development of the scientific pedagogical school of NSPI/NSPU. The theoretical and methodological basis of our research is the democratization and humanization of education, a personality-oriented approach in pedagogy. The research method is a comparative analysis of scientific sources, an appeal to archival documents. The scientific novelty of the article lies in the fact that F. F. Shamakhov’s works revealed a tendency to include personal meanings and values of education for students in the updated characteristics of the school. Against the background of tightening general requirements for improving education in secondary schools, the scientist continues to defend the idea of the importance of studying regional education systems and shows the contribution of Siberia to preserving the national specificity of school education. In conclusion, it is noted that Feodosiy Feodosievich made an invaluable contribution to the development of the scientific school of pedagogy at NSPI/NSPU. Working as a professor in the Department of Pedagogy and Psychology, which, under the leadership of another outstanding figure of the pedagogical institute, Yu. V. Sharov, implemented a project to form spiritual and moral values in children and young people, he gave scientific work status and ensured its dissemination on an all-Union scale.
