The Psychological Basis of Soft Skills in Schoolchildren

Abstract:
The main trends of the near future are digitalization, robotization and automation of production, the introduction of artificial intelligence technologies, and a reduction in the share of occupations involving only human labor. In this regard, there is a need to develop in students such hard and soft skills and personal qualities that would make them competitive in the future labor market. Based on this, the aim of the article is to analyze the component composition of soft skills and to substantiate diagnostic methods for working with schoolchildren. The research methodology isbased on the provisions of the activity approach (internalization/externalization) and the competencybased approach (formation of a personality possessing professional competencies). We believe that soft skills arelogically correlated with universal competencies. Soft skills enable their holder to work in a team, generate ideas, and adapt to changes, which makes him/her effective in any team. Soft skills are defined as an integrative set of sociocommunicative, cognitive, and emotionalvolitional qualities of a personality that ensure the effectiveness of project and communicative activities in solving technological problems, including the ability to interact in a team, critically analyze information, think creatively, selforganize, and reflect. The authors analyzed the structure of soft skills, where each component is necessary and sufficient for solving projective and technological tasks in the classroom. The article also examines issues related to the diagnosis of soft skills in schoolchildren. The difficulty of diagnosis is due to the procedural (dynamic) nature of soft skills, the nonlinearity of their manifestation, and the lack of agespecific psychometric tools. The article concludes that the components of soft skills cover a number of personality domains and ensure social interaction through project-based and technological activities in the classroom: the socio-psychological domain ensures teamwork, social activity, and communication; the cognitive domain includes critical thinking, creativity, and reflection; and the regulatory domain ensures personal self-organization.
